I spent several hours today trying all three for the first time and got the impression I probably can't.
This stack uses 20 16-bit 45-megapixel images from the Nikon D850. Once I begin making series of focus-bracketed images (Nikon calls it focus shifting), I plan on licensing either Helicon Focus or Zerene Stacker to stack the images when Photoshop CC's stacking capability isn't sufficient. Because 16-bit TIFF files are lossless and have more bits per pixel than are captured by current cameras, this process retains all of the image quality intrinsic to the raw formats. Solid win for the 2020 iMac 5K- the 2019 iMac 5K takes 27% longer. After stacking the 16-bit TIFFs, tell Zerene Stacker to save its output also as 16-bit TIFF. Being Java-based, it does not use the GPU. Zerene Stacker is outstanding at using all CPU cores.
I find that I get the best out of Dmap by doing Dmap substacks and combining them with Pmax. Dmap is the harder to use of the two but gives a smoother, more subtle outcome, whereas Pmax is the mode that people invariably start out with.

Zerene Stacker is not the fastest stacking software out there (see Helicon Focus results), but minimizing touchup work is far more important and that’s where Zerene Stacker shines by yielding results that minimize the need for retouching and my retouching time is far more important than the computer time. Zerene Stacker has a couple of focus stack blending modes called Pmax & Dmap which perform different blends. It is not a technique that is normally neccessary. Slabbing is a useful tool when used in conjunction with retouching, but by itself it is not a panacea for poor technique or other issues. For my photographic work, I use Zerene Stacker heavily for focus stacking and it takes minutes to do some stacks, so speed here matters. Substack slabbing is the recognised technique to solve some of the most common challenges that come with focus stacking macro images.
